The Role

 

The Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Engineer at the STERIS V. Mueller facility in St. Louis is primarily responsible for assisting the V. Mueller HSE department in the development and maintenance of HSE Programs, Policies, and Procedures at V. Mueller St. Louis. The HSE Engineer will partner with the local leadership, operations support teams, and directly with production floor associates to develop, maintain, and implement HSE related initiatives to ensure compliance and drive HSE performance improvement. The incumbent will regularly monitor regulatory guidelines, company performance standards, and take initiative to continuously improve our HSE programs.

The Health Safety & Environment Engineer performs a variety of assigned tasks to support and ensure HSE compliance and improvement across V. Mueller St. Louis operations. The HSE engineer will be responsible for coordinating, leading, and implementing compliance and improvement programs at V. Mueller St. Louis. Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of and ability to interpret regulations to achieve HSE compliance. The HSE engineer will interface with all levels of organizational employees, vendors, and regulatory agencies.

What You Will Do

  • Serves as liaison between floor associates, support functions, and management; primary point of contact for facility employees regarding HSE issues, initiatives, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Leads the tactical and technical execution of the HSE strategy to achieve goals and objectives as advised by the HSE Manager.
  • Leads and coordinates the day-to-day operation and implements site HSE and Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene policies and procedures.
  • Closely monitors changes to HSE regulations and company performance standards; implement changes to maintain compliance and conformance.
  • Develops, leads, coordinates, and conducts periodic HSE audits and assessments to evaluate compliance, conformance and effectiveness of HSE Policies and Procedures.
  • Documents assessment findings; supports management in resolving discrepancies; implements changes to prevent recurrence of prior findings.
  • Coordinates and performance ergonomic risk evaluations and development of ergonomic practice improvements.
  • Participates in new design and process development initiatives; aiming to minimize hazards and waste.
  • Develops and updates training materials and administers training (and drills) to facility employees as needed; maintain site training matrix.

What You Will Also Do

 

  • Conducts risk assessments / process evaluations to determine suitability, or potential improvement, of existing controls.
  • Leads site safety committee and drives pollution prevention and sustainability programs.
  • Leads incident investigation team; evaluates risks and incidents; and identifies areas where costs and loss experience can be improved.
  • Manages site worker’s compensation claims and coordinates employee health activities.
  • Coordinates and conducts waste audits/inspections and shipment of regulated waste. Monitors compliance with wastewater permitting requirements.
  • Maintains site SDS database and hazard communication program.
  • Tracks lagging/ leading indicators and metrics, submits monthly reports, and enter metrics/ KPI data into the HSE Management Information System (MIS)
  • Prepares site level HSE awareness, topics, trends, and issues communication.  

What You Will Need to Succeed

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or related field
  • 4 years of experience working primarily in an environmental, health, and safety capacity.
  • In lieu of degree, 12 years of experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong acuity in MS Office applications and web-based platforms
  • Professional presence with strong oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, prioritization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to setbacks, adversity, and diversity.
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently or with others in cross-functional project teams.
  • Experience prioritizing and implementing changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with HSE programs and knowledge of regulatory requirements: OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, ACGIH, and other similar agencies.
  • Familiarity with ISO14001:2015 and ISO45001:2018.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Recordkeeping Requirements

Work Conditions

 

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing setting for extended periods of time while wearing PPE, such as ear plugs, safety glasses, and other required PPE.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 35lbs.
  • Ability to travel up to 5%

Skills

  • Ability to communicate across functions, professional levels, and backgrounds both orally and written.
  • Literate and adept with PC and related software (Microsoft 365, SAP, Oracle, Web-based Platforms) to develop reports, procedures, manage data, training materials, etc.
  • Must be able to evaluate complex employee relations issues and develop rational basis for decision-making that balances employee and company interests.
  • Proficient and effective analytical, technical, and evidenced based problem-solving skills
  • Engaging presentation, meeting, and communication skills.
  • Results driven leadership, project management, and goal setting skills.

Preferred Experience

 

  • Professional Certification (CSP/ASP) or willingness and dedication to continue education and achieve.
  • Ambitious self-starter with ability to identify, prioritize, and complete tasks without constant or direct supervision.
  • Experience working in a machining environment; experience with mills, lathes, cutting machines, etc.
  • Knowledge of ergonomic and human factors workplace practices
  • Lean manufacturing knowledge and experience preferred.
